TERM: DESCRIPTION:
The Chair of Research is responsible for the research component of both AUA and AUAF’s missions and implementation of the Consolidated Strategic Plan. This includes, but is not limited to, working to advance research progress across the entire spectrum of urologic diseases, increase and diversify funding opportunities for research in urologic disease, and enhance a culture that develops urologic investigators. To accomplish these strategies, the Chair will provide oversight to the Research Council and serve as an advisor to the Office of Research and liaison with external organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and its divisions including NIDDK, National Cancer Institute, and other federal agencies such as Veterans’ Health Administration, Department of Defense, etc.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
In executing responsibilities, the Chair of Research will report to the Board of Directors, will chair the Research Council and oversee the various subcommittees of the Council (e.g., Scholar Grants Review Committee, National Urologic Research Agenda Work Group, etc.). The Chair, moreover, must work in a mutually effective and collaborative manner with the AUAF Executive Director and Director of the Office of Research to help coordinate and implement research activities (e.g., Research Scholar Breakfast, Research Forum, etc.). The Chair is expected to commit 8-10 hours per week, which includes teleconferences and meetings with staff, Research Scholars, Surgeon Scientists, various committees and representatives of external organizations/agencies as well as providing a presentation to the Board of Directors three times a year. This time commitment includes travel up to 30 days annually for attendance at AUA’s Annual Meeting, fall Board of Directors meeting, leadership meetings with NIH/NIDDK and interaction with other AUA/AUAF Councils supporting AUAF’s education, advocacy, and fundraising activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Certified by the American Board of Urology.
2. AUA Member, Active in the practice of urology at the time of assumption of the position.
3. Must comply with AUA’s Disclosure and Conflict of Interest Policy, thereby divesting himself/herself of any governance role, consultant or advisor, paid lecturer or paid attendee directly from PhrMA/Medical Device companies prior to and throughout the term of office for this AUA policy-making position.
4. Must be an urologist with current or recent research funding and a strong track record of achievement in clinical urology and urology research as evidenced by funding and publication history.
5. Possess NIH Study Section review experience and familiarity with NIH/NIDDK/NCI operating procedures and leadership.
6. Must be an effective communicator with the vision, enthusiasm and interest in the entry-level urologist pursuing research to move both the individual research and the field of urology forward.
7. Must have outstanding diplomacy and superior negotiation skills.
8. Must be available for communication with members of the Board of Directors and staff via email, facsimile and teleconference including a willingness to be available on short notice to consult on issues of vital importance to urology that often require an immediate response. |
